The Four-Wheel Scorecard: Is Your Business Ride Smooth or Bumpy?
Liz Gibbs • July 24, 2026

A quick, honest exercise to rate your satisfaction, independence, freedom and future potential — and pinpoint the one change that will make the biggest difference.

There's one truth every business owner eventually runs into: you can't fix what you've never stopped to look at.

Most owners we work with are flat out. Between deadlines, clients, staff and cash flow, there's always another fire to put out — which means the bigger question rarely gets asked:

How am I actually going?

Here's a quick exercise you can try right now.

Grab a pen and paper and sketch a car with four wheels. Each wheel stands for a different part of your business and life:

1. Personal Satisfaction Outside of work, how content and balanced do you feel? Is there enough room for family, health, relationships and the things that matter to you?

2. Business Independence How much does the business rely on you personally? If you stepped back for a week, a month, or longer, would it keep running well without you?

3. Operational Freedom Are you still buried in the day-to-day — solving every problem, wearing every hat, making every call?

4. Future Potential Do you have real clarity on where the business is heading, with a workable plan to get there — or is it more hope than strategy?

Now score yourself out of 10 on each wheel, and draw each one to match. A 10/10 wheel is full and round. A 5/10 is half the size. A 2/10 is barely there.

Step back and look at your car. How would it actually drive? If all four wheels sit close to 10, you're in for a fairly smooth ride. But if you've got an 8, a 6, a 4 and a 2, picture trying to drive with four wildly mismatched wheels. It's not going to be a comfortable trip. And that's often exactly what running a business feels like when one area has been neglected while another gets all the attention.

Your lowest-scoring wheel is trying to tell you something. This isn't about being hard on yourself, or expecting a perfect 10 across the board — it's about spotting where your next real opportunity sits.

A business that's financially strong but can't function without you needs attention. A strong team built at the cost of your personal life needs attention too. And if you're working harder than ever but can't say with confidence where it's all leading, it might be time to reset the destination.

Your scorecard gives you a starting point. From there, ask: what could I realistically do in the next 90 days to lift my lowest wheel by even one or two points? You don't need to overhaul everything at once — small, deliberate shifts in the right area can smooth out the whole ride.

Take five minutes today and draw your own four-wheel scorecard. What gets measured gets improved — and sometimes one adjustment to the right wheel changes the entire journey. If you'd like a second set of eyes on where your business needs it most, we're here to help you get more clarity, confidence and control.
