Why should someone choose you over anyone else?

Ray is a landscape designer, and this week the rain stopped him in his tracks. With sites too wet to work on and clients postponing, he had two choices: sit by the window and worry about cash flow, or use the downtime to work on his business instead of in it.
He chose the second.
Ray pulled up his website and winced. It said what every landscaper’s website says: “quality workmanship,” “creative designs,” “transforming outdoor spaces.” Nothing that gave anyone a reason to choose him over the next quote.
So he spent the afternoon calling a dozen past clients and asking one question: “What frustrated you most about landscapers you’ve used before?”
The answers were remarkably consistent. “The quote blew out halfway through.” “They’d disappear for days and never tell us why.” “The design looked amazing, but half the plants died within a year.” “We had no idea when it would actually be finished.”
Ray realised the market wasn’t short of good designs. It was short of certainty.
He turned every complaint into a promise:
Instead of blowouts, a fixed-price quote with no surprise variations.
Instead of silence, a weekly progress update, rain or shine.
Instead of dying gardens, plants chosen for local conditions and a 12-month plant guarantee.
Instead of serving “everyone,” busy families wanting low-maintenance outdoor living spaces.
His new USP read: “We design low-maintenance outdoor spaces for busy families, with fixed pricing, weekly updates and a 12-month plant guarantee.”
The rain hasn’t stopped yet, but Ray already has a sharper message ready to go. When the sites dry out and the enquiries return, he won’t be just another quote in the pile. He’ll be the landscaper who’s already answered the questions clients are quietly worried about, and that makes it far easier to stop competing on price.
Ray didn’t change his skills. He used a quiet week to listen to what his industry kept getting wrong, and built his business to get it right.
Next time you find yourself with unexpected downtime, ask your past clients what frustrated them most about others in your industry. When you build your offer around eliminating those fears, you stop competing on price.
