Before you chase the next opportunity, make sure you're looking after the people and systems already delivering for you.

One of my colleagues was talking through a leadership issue last week — a manager who'd been steadily burning through staff for years. Blunt communication, no patience, high turnover. And as the story unfolded, someone in the room made the connection: Aesop's fable of the goose that laid the golden eggs.
You know the one. A farmer has a goose that lays a golden egg every single day. Instead of being grateful for a steady, reliable source of wealth, he grew greedy and impatient. He decides there must be a stash of gold inside the goose, so he kills it to get it all at once. Of course, there's nothing inside but a goose. He's destroyed the very thing that was making him rich, chasing more, faster.
It's nearly 2,600 years old, and it still nails one of the most common mistakes in business today: we squeeze the thing that's working instead of nurturing it.
Your best people are golden geese. So are your best clients, your best referral sources, your best systems. They reliably produce value, day after day, without fanfare. Their reliability makes it tempting to take them for granted — to pile on more work, cut corners on how you treat them, or assume they'll always be there.
They won't. Push a good staff member too hard for too long with no acknowledgment, and they leave. Squeeze a loyal client for one deal too many without looking after the relationship, and they quietly walk. The golden eggs stop coming, and by the time you notice, the goose is already gone.
The lesson isn't complicated: protect what's already working before you chase what isn't. Nurture the goose. The eggs will keep coming.
Who are your golden geese right now — and when did you last truly appreciate them?
