Fuel excise relief extended for July
Liz Gibbs • July 7, 2026

Petrol and diesel prices stay 16 cents per litre lower as the Government extends relief measures, with an added boost for heavy vehicle operators.

The Government has confirmed a further extension of fuel excise relief through to 2 August 2026, alongside a reduction in the Heavy Vehicle Road User Charge for transport and freight operators.

Under the extension, fuel excise will be cut from 52.6 cents per litre to 36.6 cents per litre, while the Road User Charge drops from 32.4 cents per litre to 16.4 cents per litre. Together, these measures mean petrol and diesel will be around 16 cents per litre cheaper at the bowser than they otherwise would have been throughout July.

For business owners running fleets or relying on freight and transport, this extension offers welcome short-term relief on operating costs. It's also a timely reminder to keep an eye on your Fuel Tax Credit rates, as these will adjust in line with the new excise settings.

If you'd like help working through what this means for your business — whether that's cash flow forecasting, fuel tax credit claims, or planning ahead for when rates return to normal from 3 August — get in touch with the team at RGA.
